Blown Castor Oil

Blown castor oil is also known as oxidized oil. Blown castor oil is a derivative with higher viscosity. It is prepared by blowing air or oxygen into castor oil. This is called oxidative polymerization. Oxidative polymerization of castor oil yields products with increased viscosities resulting from oxidative polymerization, increased compatibility with various resins and improves ability to wet and disperse pigments while imparting solvent and abrasion resistance to lacquer systems – Lacquer systems are highly resistant to weather conditions and unaffected by industrial emissions. Castor oil which is polymerized are used to plasticize a variety of resins in adhesive, heat-set inks and sealant systems. Blown castor oil is also used in hydraulic fluids and as lubricity additive in manufacturing of lithographic inks. Blown castor oil has been classic plasticizer of shellac rosin, natural and synthetic resins, the celluloses and for natural and synthetic rubbers.
